Butterflies fluttering! Hundreds, maybe Thousands of them! This is what greeted me on an exploration of Bear Creek Rd leading out from Lowman, ID. There was just a small trickle and pool of water at the edge of the road, and these fairy winged creatures were huddled en masse on the banks of it, sucking moisture from the damp earth. Whenever something spooked them, they would take off fluttering aimlessly across the road and back again, in a faltering start and stop, this way and that pattern. Hundreds of them all at once – a cloud of butterflies until they settled on the mud once more.
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything like this in my life! Small ones, big ones, all sizes and colors. I don’t know my butterflies but I intend to do some research when I have cell signal again so I can put names to these wonderful floating beings. I counted at least 6-7 different types of butterflies all congregating together at, what was for them, the watering hole!
I was marveling at what a privilege it was that they allowed me to wander gingerly amongst them taking pictures. I was equally stunned when other drivers zoomed past with no interest in this incredible phenomenon! Only one truck stopped and two women jumped out to partake in this spectacle as well, delighted at what they saw.
They too understood the uniqueness of this special moment!
This spectacle would have freaked me out and I would have taken pictures from afar – in the car with windows up!
Yep, I remember how it was when we went to that butterfly house in Tucson! I was thinking of you when I was taking these pictures!!
